In Latin, “Thuja Plicata” – it means no worries, for the rest of your dayyyys. Ok thats not true. But it is all American; native to the west coast of our great nation, and among the most populous of trees in the Pacific Northwest.
What is so great about Western Red Cedar, you ask? Glad you asked. We didn’t just see a giant wood pile and pick the prettiest color. It is a highly sought varietal for all types of outdoor uses. It is commonly used for decking, docks, kayaks, sail boats, even in roofing. The reason is, in part, its beautiful color and aroma. But more so because of its make-up.
Here is its wood resume:
It has a straight, tight grain and very few knots.
It has naturally occurring fungicide, meaning it is resistant to rot.
It is resistant to insect attacks.
It is very strong while still being light weight.
It is pitch and resin free.
Its perfect for holding a wide variety of beautiful stains and finishes.
Being a hard wood, it is also scratch resistant.
And last but not least, listen to this quote on sustainability from http://www.thinkwood.com “Western red cedar is renewable, recyclable, biodegradable and harvested from some of the most sustainably managed forests in the world.”
How can one wood type be so resistant to so many different naturally occurring wood-destroyers? So beautiful to behold? So sustainable? AND so durable and lightweight? Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, it’s also our most affordable dock surface. We don’t know its all possible, but we certainly enjoy it as much as our customers do. We encourage all of our customers and friends to take a long look at Western Red Cedar when choosing decking for their docks. And don’t forget to add a deck sealer to prolong the life of your 4×4 decking panels! We recommend an optional Cabot stain to match the tones in your house with a deck sealer like Thompson’s Water Seal.
